How to Keep Your Driving Income Steady in a Slow Week

A slow week hurts because every dollar depends on the app sending you work. Riders who book you ahead give you income that exists before the week starts, which is the only real defense against a slow one.

Why a slow week hits so hard

On the apps, you have no backlog. There is no work waiting for you when you log on. Demand goes down, and your income goes down with it, immediately and completely.

Nothing you did last week protects you. The rider who told you that you were the best driver she has had all month does not show up in this week's earnings. She went back into the pool. When the pool is empty, so is your day.

That is what it means to have no book of business. You are not running a slow week. You are running the same week you always run, with the tap turned down.

The part of the week that cannot go quiet

There is one kind of ride a slow app cannot take away from you: the ride that was already booked.

A rider who books you for Thursday at 6am is going to Thursday at 6am whether or not the app is busy. The standing airport run, the weekly appointment, the same commute every Tuesday. That work exists before the week starts, and it does not care what surge is doing.

Stack up enough of those and a slow week stops being a cliff. It becomes a quiet week with a floor under it.

Where those riders come from

You have already met them. That is the part most drivers miss.

Every good rider you have driven this year was a candidate. They liked the car, they liked the drive, and a lot of them would happily see you again. They just had no way to ask for you, so the app gave them somebody else.

The riders worth booking are the ones with a schedule:

  • commuters going the same way at the same time
  • people with standing medical or therapy appointments
  • early airport runs, where nobody wants to gamble on a stranger
  • parents with a fixed school or activity run
  • anyone who has ever said "I wish I could just request you"

None of them need convincing. They need a way to reach you.

What to do before the next slow week

The work happens while the app is still busy. That is the uncomfortable part, because a good week is exactly when nobody feels like fixing anything.

At the end of a good ride, once you have pulled up, say the line: if you ever need a ride like this again, you can book me directly. Then send them your link at drop-off. That is the whole play.

Do it on the good rides only. Ten regulars is not a large ask, and ten regulars changes what a slow week does to you.

Steady is a system, not a season

Waiting for demand to come back is not a plan, because demand was never yours to control. What you can control is how much of your week was decided before it started.

That is what a booking page is for. Your riders book you ahead, your regulars carry from one week into the next, and the app becomes what it should have been all along: a source of new passengers, not the owner of all of them.
